Cannabis in Ohio: Medical vs. Recreational

Ohio’s cannabis program now includes both medical and adult-use (recreational) markets. While both provide access to high-quality cannabis products, there are key differences in eligibility, purchasing, and intended use.

Medical Cannabis

Eligibility:

  • Must be 18+ and registered with Ohio’s Medical Marijuana Control Program (MMCP).

Taxes:

  • Lower tax rate than adult-use (recreational) products.

  • No state excise tax; patients pay standard sales tax only.

Amount You Can Purchase:

  • Registered patients may purchase up to a 45-day supply of medical cannabis within each 45-day period (as determined by the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program).

  • Typically includes higher purchase and possession limits than recreational consumers.

Recreational Cannabis

  • Adults may purchase and possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis or 15 grams of extract at a time (per current Ohio law).

  • There’s no specific time restriction (like a 45-day limit), but customers may not possess more than the legal amount at any given time.
